A Calgary Dentist Committed to your Total Health

Holistic Dentist CalgaryOur philosophy at Health First Dental is simple—your health comes first. We are general dental practice dedicated to provide ideal dental care that will not only result in a beautiful smile but will also result in excellent health.

Our treatment and practices are founded in sound, scientific evidence. Current research continues to prove the significant impact oral health has on the entire body. Seemingly benign conditions like gum disease can increase the risk of heart disease, diabetes, and low-birth weight babies. Commonly used dental materials, which are placed in your mouth, can have a negative impact on the body’s natural ability to maintain general health.

At Health First Dental, we recognize the important role your mouth plays in maintaining excellent health. We diagnose and treat dental diseases, including gum disease, chronic jaw bone infections, oral cancer, tempero-mandibular joint disorders (TMJ), and tooth decay. We address threats to your health from toxic materials like mercury-amalgam fillings, fluoride, and incompatible metals. Dr. Sean Freiberg draws upon the latest research and current technologies to provide a wide variety of health-centered dental care options,

Our team is trained to share our knowledge in a way which enables you to make an informed decision regarding your oral health care. We feel it is imperative that you are involved in the decisions affecting your health.

We look forward to partnering with you on your path to health and are confident that our philosophy combined with our customer service will make coming to the dentist a positive experience.

Disclaimer: Most dentists are not of the view that mercury amalgam, fluoride, or root canals are potentially harmful to your health.

Treatment & Services

Mercury Free Dentistry - Overview

For 180 years dentistry has used silver amalgam, which contains approximately 50% mercury, as a preferred tooth filling material. Medical research has demonstrated that mercury vapor is continuously released from these fillings into mouth air, which is inhaled and absorbed into body tissues. Animal and human studies demonstrate that dental amalgam is the major contributing source of mercury in the body.

Health First Dental's holistic approach to dentistry means we prefer to avoid putting poisonous materials like mercury in the body and provide completely mercury free alternatives to amalgam fillings.

Fluoride Free Dentistry - Overview

Today more than ever, evidence of fluoride’s toxicity is entering the public sphere, and its benefits in decreasing tooth decay are being questioned.

Fluoride has been used in dentistry for decades because of its proposed effectiveness in reducing tooth decay. Dental schools teach that fluoride makes the enamel more resistant to the acidic by-products of the bacteria in your mouth. For this reason, fluoride has been placed in our drinking water, put in toothpaste, and used in very high concentrations in dental offices.

However, this “cure” for the common cavity has come under scrutiny.

Mercury Safe Protocols - Overview

High doses of mercury vapor and particulate can be inhaled, absorbed, or swallowed during the removal of amalgam fillings. Extreme caution should be taken by the dentist to protect patients from being exposed to dangerously high levels of mercury when replacing amalgam fillings. If improperly performed, the haphazard removal of mercury fillings can cause more harm than good.

Dr. Freiberg follows specific safety protocols designed by the International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology (IAOMT) to prevent harmful exposure to mercury when removing silver amalgam fillings.

Biocompatibility Testing - Overview

A biocompatibility report (also called a dental materials reactivity test) provides information on any material sensitivities a patient may have. It is created from an immunological blood analysis. The test examines an individual’s antibody reaction to various chemical groups found in dental materials. The analysis considers metals as well as composites, cements, anesthetics, and other dental components, which can often cause immunological reactions. The results are compiled into a report, which lists over 6,300 dental products by trade-name and indicates whether the product is “suitable” or “not suitable” to be placed in the individual’s mouth.

Root Canal Alternative - Overview

When an infection develops inside of a tooth, the only options for treatment are extraction or root canal therapy. Although root canal therapy can preserve the function of a tooth in the mouth, concerns exist regarding the potential health risks of root canalled teeth. Unfortunately, many negative consequences also exist following tooth removal.  Fortunately there are alternatives to traditional root canal therapies that should be considered.

Dental Implants Calgary - Overview

Dental implants are the best alternative to natural teeth. A dental implant is a titanium post that replaces the root of a missing natural tooth. They are placed in the upper or lower jawbone and act as anchors for crowns, bridges, or dentures.

Dental implants function and feel like natural teeth, improve smiles, prevent bone loss associated with missing teeth, and eliminate the need to drill healthy teeth when placing a bridge. Statistics from three decades of clinical experience confirm a success rate of nearly 95% over a five year period for dental implants.

Invisalign - Overview

Invisalign is a virtually invisible way to straighten your teeth without metal bands, brackets, or wires. Invisalign combines the doctors clinical treatment plan with proprietary 3-D, computer-generated software to create a series of unique, custom-made aligners that move teeth in very precise increments. The aligner is a clear, thin piece of medical grade plastic that fits over the teeth like a glove would fit on a hand.

As you replace each aligner with the next in the series, your teeth will move little by little, week by week until they have straightened to the final position prescribed by Dr. Freiberg. The aligners can be removed to eat, drink, brush and floss. Ideally the aligners should be worn at least 22 hour per day. Treatment time varies depending on your individual circumstances; however, most cases take less than one year.

Cosmetic Dentistry - Overview

The smile is the most eye catching feature of the face. Overall health and wellness includes feeling confident and self-assured. A beautiful smile can change the way you feel about yourself and the way others treat you. Cosmetic dental procedures can transform stained, chipped, or crooked teeth into stunning smiles.

Laser Therapy - Overview

Low level laser therapy (LLLT) has been used for decades in the medical profession to improve soft tissue healing and to relieve both acute and chronic pain. Unlike surgical lasers which cut and cauterize, low level laser therapy uses cold (subthermal) laser light energy to produce a healing effect called biostimulation.

Anesthetic Reversal - Overview

At Health First Dental we pride ourselves on making your visit to the dentist as comfortable as possible. Although dental anesthetic eliminates the pain of dental procedures, most people dislike the numb feeling in their lips and mouth that makes it difficult to smile, talk, eat, and drink for hours following routine dental procedures.

Thankfully, there has been a breakthrough which accelerates the return to normal feeling and function.

Preventative Care - Overview

Maintaining health is more important than treating disease. Our society has been programmed do believe in a concept of “false health”. We assume if it doesn’t hurt, everything must be OK. Unfortunately once symptoms are manifest, significant and often irreversible damage has been done. This is particularly true for the oral environment.

At Health First Dental, our patients are on a regular preventative maintenance program. This program provides early detection, thus shifting our focus from disease treatment to prevention.
